    Demand for accommodation services grew by 3.9 per cent in 2019

    In 2019, accommodation establishments in Finland recorded over 23 million overnight stays, of which domestic tourists accounted for around 16 million and foreign tourists for 7.1 million. The foreign demand for accommodation services grew by 3.1 per cent and the domestic demand grew by 4.2 per cent compared with the previous year. The total demand for accommodation services grew in total by 3.9 per cent in 2019.

    Re-exports accounted for seven per cent of Finlands total exports in 2016

    According to Statistics Finland's input-output statistics, the share of re-exports in the total value of exports of goods and services at purchasers prices was seven per cent in 2016. The value of re-exports was biggest in exports of computers, electronic and optical products.

    Sea transport decreased in February

    The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 7.1 million tonnes in February 2020. Sea transport decreased by 0.5 million tonnes from last year's February. Export volume fell by 11 per cent and amounted to 3.6 million tonnes. Imports decreased by 0.1 per cent to 3.5 million tonnes.

    Transport in domestic waterborne traffic increased in February

    The goods volume in domestic waterborne traffic totalled 915,416 tonnes in February 2020. Transport in domestic waterborne traffic increased by 0.2 million tonnes compared to last year's February. In February 2020 all domestic water transport took place in coastal waterways.

    In March 2020 a total of 15,853 new motor vehicles were registered, of which 10,738 were automobiles. First registrations increased by 1.8 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year. In March the number of new passenger cars registered was 9,194, which was 0.9 per cent down from the year before. The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 15.8 per cent. These data are based on the Traffic Affairs Register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, prices of old dwellings in housing companies rose by 1.6 per cent in Greater Helsinki compared to the corresponding period of the previous year in the last quarter of 2019. Prices decreased by some two per cent elsewhere in Finland. Compared to the third quarter, prices remained the same in Greater Helsinki and went down by 2.6 per cent in the rest of the country.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the seasonally adjusted turnover of large enterprises contracted by 0.4 per cent in February 2020 compared with January. In January, seasonally adjusted turnover fell by 0.6 per cent, while in December, turnover was 0.5 per cent higher than in the month before.

    856,000 people were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2018

    Statistics Finland's statistics on living conditions show that 856,000 Finns, or 15.8 per cent of the entire household population were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2018. The number of persons at risk fell by around 34,000 persons from the previous year, and the share was on the same level as in 2016. The number of persons at risk diminished in all dimensions of the indicator, for persons living in a low income household, in a household with low work intensity and those experiencing severe material deprivation.

    Consumer confidence weakened in March - trust in own economy

    The consumer confidence indicator (CCI) stood at -7.1 in March, having been -4.5 in February and -4.6 in January. In last years March, the CCI received the value -2.3. The long-term average for the CCI is -1.7. The data are based on Statistics Finlands Consumer Confidence Survey, to which 1,053 persons resident in Finland responded between 2 and 19 March. The majority of responses were received before 13 March, that is, prior to the Governments restrictive measures related to the coronavirus pandemic. Statistics Finland will publish actual inquiry data on the economic effect of the pandemic during April .

    General governments net financial assets increased in the last quarter of 2019

    At the end of the fourth quarter of 2019, general government's net financial assets, i.e. the difference between assets and liabilities, amounted to EUR 150.5 billion. Net financial assets grew by EUR 7.2 billion from the previous quarter, mainly due to employment pension schemes' positive holding gains. These data derive from general government financial accounts compiled by Statistics Finland.

    Households financial assets grew by EUR 5.2 billion during the fourth quarter of 2019 rising to EUR 329.3 billion. In turn, households debts increased by EUR 3.2 billion during the fourth quarter of 2019 rising to EUR 184.1 billion. As a result of these changes, households' net financial assets increased by EUR 2.0 billion to EUR 145.2 billion. Net financial assets refer to the difference between financial assets and liabilities. These data derive from Statistics Finlands financial accounts statistics.

    Altogether 1.9 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in February 2020, which was one per cent lower than one year before. There were 1.5 million passengers at Helsinki Airport and a total of 0.4 million passengers at other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 78 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

Helsinki Airport accounted for 84 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports. There were 1.1 million passengers at Oulu Airport, 0,7 million passengers at Rovaniemi Airport and 0,5 million passengers at Turku Airport.

    Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments increased by 10.1 per cent from last year and 1.23 million nights were recorded for them in February 2020. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 1.9 per cent and 0.61 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.85 million overnight stays, which was 7.2 per cent more than one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    According to Statistics Finlands retail trade flash estimate, the working day adjusted turnover of retail trade increased by 4.2 per cent in February from February 2019. The volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of price changes has been eliminated, increased by 2.8 per cent over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, the working day adjusted turnover increased by 3.3 per cent in February and the sales volume, in turn, by 1.3 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.
