    RD funding grows in the 2020 budget

    According to Statistics Finland, appropriations for research and development in the government budget increase by EUR 68.6 million from the year before. In the state budget 2020, the total appropriations for research and development activities amount to EUR 2,062.5 million. The share of public research funding in gross domestic product is estimated to be 0.83 per cent.

    Vessels in the regular merchant fleet numbered 685 in January 2020

    In January 2020, the size of the Finnish merchant fleet was 1,243 vessels. The regular merchant fleet included 685 vessels and the number of small vessels was 284. The number of engineless vessels was 274 in total. The Register of Merchant Vessels, in which vessels operating mainly in foreign traffic can be entered, contained a total of 116 vessels in January 2020. The gross tonnage of the entire registered merchant fleet was 1,872,283. The share of gross tonnage of the regular merchant fleet was 1,736,959 and the share of vessels entered in the Register of Merchant Vessels 1,574,660.

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.0 per cent in January. In December, inflation stood at 0,9 per cent. The commodity basket for the Consumer Price Index and the weight structure were updated at the beginning of January. Mens and womens sports shirts were added to the commodity basket. In addition, the usage of total data was expanded with fresh products, soft and alcoholic drinks, cleaning and maintenance products and personal hygiene products.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 17 lives in January

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 298 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in January. In them, 17 persons were killed and 383 persons injured. The number of persons killed was four higher and that of persons injured one lower than in January 2019. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    There were 37,500 open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2019, while the figure was 41,000 one year before. These data derive from Statistics Finland's statistics on open job vacancies and describe the situation on the first day of December. In 2019, there were 50,000 open job vacancies, on average, which is roughly the same number as in the previous year (49,400).

    Building costs rose by 0.6 per cent in January year-on-year

According to revised data, working day adjusted output increased in November 2019 by 1.6 per cent (previously 2.3 per cent) from November 2018.

    Turnover and output in services grew in December

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 2.1 per cent in December 2019 from December 2018. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 0.8 per cent over the same period. In November 2019, turnover reached a growth of 2.2 per cent, while volume went up by 1.2 per cent from one year back. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    Turnover in manufacturing grew by 6.7 per cent in December

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) increased in December by 6.7 per cent year-on-year. Of the main industries, turnover grew most in the electronic and electrical industry, by 45.4 per cent, and in the metal industry, by 22.2 per cent. Seasonally adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) grew by 4.0 per cent compared with November.

    According to Statistics Finland, growth in turnover in total trade adjusted for working days slowed down towards the end of 2019, just slightly rising by 0.1 per cent in December from one year ago. Over the same time period, the working day adjusted volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, fell by 0.4 per cent. The contraction in wholesale trade weakened the development of both turnover and sales volume in December.

    Adjusted for working days, turnover of construction enterprises contracted by 1.8 per cent in December from one year back. Measured by sales volume, construction decreased by 3.7 per cent. The fall in turnover and sales volume was mainly affected by the weak development of building construction compared to one year ago.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 2.2 per cent in October to December year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 2.2 per cent greater in the October to December period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In December, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 0.4 per cent from the year before. One year previously in October to December, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 5.0 per cent.

    According to Statistics Finlands register of providers of education and register of educational institutions, there were 704 active providers of education and 3,175 educational institutions in which around 1.84 million students pursued studies at the end of 2019. A total of 2,187 comprehensive schools were in operation, 22 per cent of which were joint schools comprising grades 1 to 9. The share of joint schools in comprehensive schools has risen by 10 percentage points in ten years.

    Seasonally adjusted industrial output (TOL BCD) grew by 0.3 per cent in December from the month before. According to Statistics Finland, industrial output adjusted for working days was 0.6 per cent higher in December 2019 compared to December 2018. Adjusted for working days, industrial output went up by 2.0 per cent in January to December from one year back.
