    Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland increased by 12.1 per cent in Jun...

    Nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments still grew, by 12.1 per cent from last year and nearly 602,000 nights were recorded for them in June 2017. The number of nights spent by resident tourists went up by 3.0 per cent and totalled slightly under 1.5 million at accommodation establishments. A total of nearly 2.1 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in June 2017, which was 5.5 per cent more than in June 2016. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    More open job vacancies in the second quarter than one year earlier

    According to the Job Vacancy Survey of Statistics Finland, there were 36,800 open job vacancies in the second quarter of 2017, while the figure was 30,600 one year before. The number of job vacancies increased mainly in the major regions of Southern Finland and Helsinki-Uusimaa. The reference period of the data is 1 June.

    Building costs rose by 0.3 per cent in July year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.3 per cent in July 2017 compared with the previous year's July. The prices of materials rose by 1.3 per cent and those of services by 0.6 per cent compared with July of the previous year. At the same time, the prices of labour inputs fell by 1.1 per cent. The fall in the prices of labour inputs is explained by lower employers social security costs compared with 2016.

    Output of the national economy made a downturn in June

    Seasonally adjusted output fell by 1.5 per cent in June 2017 from the month before. Adjusted for working days, output was 0.5 per cent lower than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output rose in May by 2.8 per cent (previously 2.5 per cent) from May 2016.

    Turnover in manufacturing increased by 8.3 per cent in the March to May

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in manufacturing in the March to May period was 8.3 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales grew by 6.3 per cent and export turnover by 9.8 per cent from one year ago.

    According to Statistics Finland, the turnover in service industries grew by 6.6 per cent in March to May from the corresponding time period of the year before. Professional, scientific and technical activities (+9.0%) and administrative and support services activities (+7.1%) attained strong growth. The largest ones of service industries, information and communications (+6.9%) and transportation and storage (6.2%) still grew more strongly than one year back. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.5 per cent in July. In June, inflation stood at 0.7 per cent.

    Turnover of construction enterprises grew by 8.7 per cent in March to May

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover of construction enterprises grew by 8.7 per cent in March to May 2017. In the corresponding period one year earlier, turnover grew by 10.1 per cent. The sales volume of construction grew by 5.0 per cent in March to May from one year before.

    Sales in total trade grew by 4.5 per cent year-on-year in June

    According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales increased by 3.5 per cent in June from June 2016. Among retail sale industries, sales of daily consumer goods grew by 3.0 per cent and sales in department store trade by 2.8 per cent. Over the same period, wholesale trade sales grew by 5.1 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 4.4 per cent. Sales increased in total trade by 4.5 per cent from June 2016.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 2.1 per cent year-on-year in April to June

    According to Statistics Finland, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy 2.1 per cent greater in the past April to June. In June alone, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 2.7 per cent from one year ago. One year previously in April to June the wages and salaries sum increased by 1.2 per cent.

    Industrial output grew by 1.3 per cent year-on year in June

    According to Statistics Finland, output of total industries adjusted for working days was 1.3 per cent higher in June 2017 compared to June 2016. Adjusted for working days, industrial output went up by 2.3 per cent in January to June from one year back.

    New orders in manufacturing grew by 11.9 per cent year-on-year in June

    According to Statistics Finland, the value of new orders in manufacturing was 11.9 per cent higher in June 2017 than twelve months earlier. During January to June, orders grew by 20.0 per cent from the year before.

    In July 2017 a total of 14,135 new motor vehicles were registered, of which 9,991 were automobiles. First registrations increased by 5.1 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year. In July the number of new passenger cars registered was 8,848, which was 6.0 per cent up from the year before. The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 27.7 per cent. These data are based on the Vehicular and Driver Data Register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

    Rents rose by 2.5 per cent in the year

    During the second quarter of 2017, the year-on-year increase in rents was 2.5 per cent. The rents of non-subsidised rental dwellings went up by an average of 2.4 per cent in the whole country. In the Greater Helsinki Area the rents of non-subsidised rental dwellings went up by 2.5 per cent and in the rest of Finland by 2.3 per cent. The rents of government subsidised dwellings rose by 2.6 per cent in the whole country. Compared to the previous quarter, the rents of non-subsidised dwellings increased by an average of 0.6 cent and the rents of government subsidised dwellings by 0.7 per cent.
