    A total of 88,000 unemployed found employment in 2015

    According to Statistics Finland's employment statistics, there were 2,231,000 employed persons and 375,000 unemployed persons aged 18 to 64 at the end of 2015. In all, 88,000 of unemployed persons in 2014 found employment in 2015, and 3,300 of them became employed as self-employed persons. The economic dependency ratio weakened by two people from the previous year; in 2015, there were 143 non-employed persons per one hundred employed persons.

    More open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2016 than one year earlier

    According to the Job Vacancy Survey of Statistics Finland, there were 26,400 open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2016, which is 21 per cent more than one year earlier (21,900). The reference period of the data is 1 December. In the whole of 2016, there were 33,900 open job vacancies, on average, which is 17 per cent more than in the previous year (28,900).

    Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 17.6 per cent in December 2016

    Overnight stays by non-resident tourists increased by 17.6 per cent in December and accommodation establishments recorded good 652,000 of them. The number of nights spent by resident tourists grew by 4.2 per cent and totalled nearly 867,000. A total of good 1.5 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in December 2016, which was 9.6 per cent more than in December 2015. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    Building costs rose by 0,5 per cent in January year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.5 per cent in January 2017 from one year back. The prices of materials went up by 1.2 per cent and the prices of services by 1.1 per cent. The prices of labour inputs in construction, in turn, fell by 0.4 per compared with January of the previous year.

    Retail trade sales went down by 0.7 per cent year-on-year in December

    According to Statistics Finland, sales in total trade increased by 2.1 per cent in December from December 2015. Among the sectors of trade, motor vehicle trade grew most, by 4.5 per cent. Over the same period, wholesale trade sales increased by 3.4 per cent. By contrast, sales in retail trade fell by 0.7 per cent in December from the previous year. Among retail trade industries, daily consumer goods sales grew by 0.2 per cent, whereas sales in department stores contracted by 2.8 per cent.

    The current account was EUR 0.3 billion in deficit in December. In 2016, the current account was EUR 1.8 billion in deficit. The value of exports of goods and services decreased by three per cent from December 2015. Capital flowed from Finland on net. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on balance of payments and international investment position.

    According to Statistics Finlands register of providers of education and register of educational institutions, there were 737 active providers of education and 3,395 educational institutions in which 1.85 million students pursued studies at the end of 2016. There were 2,339 active comprehensive schools, 789 of which had under 100 pupils. The number of comprehensive schools has decreased by 24 per cent in ten years.

    Seasonally adjusted output fell by 0.2 per cent in December 2016 from the month before. Adjusted for working days, output was 1.0 per cent higher than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output went up in November by 2.1 per cent (previously 1.6 per cent) from November 2015.

    Turnover in manufacturing increased by 3.8 per cent in September to November

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in manufacturing in the September to November period was 3.8 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales grew by 3.7 per cent and export turnover by 3.8 per cent from one year ago.

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 4.7 per cent in September to November from the corresponding period of the year before. Among the industries, professional, scientific and technical activities as well as administrative and support services reached a 9.1 per cent growth. Transportation and storage activities still brought up the rear with a growth of 0.7 per cent from the year before. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    According to Statistics Finland, the turnover of construction enterprises increased by 8.2 per cent and the sales volume by 5.7 per cent in the September to November period of 2016 year-on-year. In the corresponding period one year earlier turnover grew by 6.8 per cent.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 1.3 per cent year-on-year in October to December

    According to Statistics Finland, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 1.3 per cent greater in the past October to December period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In December alone, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 1.2 per cent from one year ago. One year previously in October to December, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 0.8 per cent.

    Industrial output went up by 1.3 per cent year-on-year in December

    According to Statistics Finland, output of total industries adjusted for working days was 1.3 per cent higher in December 2016 compared to December 2015. In 2016, industrial output grew by 2.4 per cent. The drop in industrial output that began in 2012 turned into growth last year. The level of industrial output is, however, nearly 17 per cent below the level that prevailed prior to the financial crisis in 2008.

    New orders in manufacturing grew by 4.7 per cent year-on-year in December

    According to Statistics Finland, the value of new orders in manufacturing was 4.7 per cent higher in December 2016 than twelve months earlier. In 2016, orders fell by 5.9 per cent year-on-year.

    According to Statistics Finlands input-output statistics, manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products had the highest share of use of imported products in production value among manufacturing industries in 2014. As much as 87 per cent of the production value in the industry consisted of the use of imported products. For the entire economy, the corresponding share was 23 per cent on average in 2014.
