    119 million EU citizens are at risk of poverty or social exclusion

    All in all, 23.7 per cent of the citizens of the European Unions 28 member states were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2014. In Finland, 16.8 per cent of the household population were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, around 904,000 persons. These data derive from the results of the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions, where Finland's data are based on Statistics Finlands income distribution statistics.

    Number of families grows more slowly than earlier

    According to Statistics Finland's data, there were 1,476,000 families in Finland at the end of 2016. Although the number of families has been growing all the time, the annual growth in the number has diminished considerably since 2013. From 2004 to 2013, the number of families grew by an average of 5,500 families per year. In 2016, the number of families went up by just 200.

    According to Statistics Finlands employment statistics there were 356,000 unemployed persons at the end 2016 of whom around one-third had been unemployed the whole year. The number of persons who had been unemployed for at least one day during the year was 681,000. The number of unemployed at the end of the year and that of persons who had been unemployed during the year decreased from 2015. Simultaneously, the number of persons who had been unemployed the whole year increased by close on 2,000. The data on unemployment in the employment statistics are based on the data of the Register of Job Seekers of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.

    Finlands greenhouse gas emissions grew

    According to Statistics Finlands instant preliminary data, the total emissions of greenhouse gases in 2016 corresponded with 58.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 eq.). Emissions grew by six per cent compared with the previous year but were still 18 per cent lower than in 1990. The biggest reasons for the growth in the emissions were the increase in coal consumption and the decline in the proportion of biofuels used in transport. Emissions from the non-emissions trading sector went up by five per cent compared to 2015 and exceeded the annual emission allocation set by the EU by 1.0 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

    Majority of comprehensive school pupils study English

    According to Statistics Finland, English was the most commonly studied foreign language on grades 1 to 6 of comprehensive school in the autumn semester of 2016. Seventy-one per cent of the pupils attending grades 1 to 6 studied English either as a compulsory or optional foreign language. The percentages of pupils studying other foreign languages remained at 5 per cent or below.

    The order of municipalities with the highest number of free-time residences changed when Juankoski merged into Kuopio at the beginning of 2017. At the same time, Kuopio became the biggest municipality in Finland by its number of free-time residences. Mikkeli was the second biggest municipality measured by the number of free-time residences in 2016. Both Kuopio and Mikkeli have more than 10,000 free-time residences. The order of other municipalities with the highest number of free-time residences remained unchanged. Statistics Finlands data describe the numbers of free-time residences according to the latest classification of municipalities. There were 502,900 free-time residences in the whole country at the end of 2016.

    According to Statistics Finland, producer prices for manufactured products rose by an average of 5.0 per cent from April 2016 to April 2017. Producer prices for manufactured products sold on the domestic market rose by 4.3 per cent, while the producer prices of export products went up by 6.0 per cent.

    Retail trade flash estimate: sales grew by 0.2 per cent year-on-year in April

    According to Statistics Finlands retail trade flash estimate, the sales of retail trade increased by 0.2 per cent in April from April 2016. Over the same period, the volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 0.4 per cent. In daily consumer goods trade, sales increased by 1.6 per cent and the sales volume by 2.1 per cent in April from the corresponding period of the previous year.

    Unemployment rate 10.2 per cent in April

    According to Statistics Finlands Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in April 2017 was 279,000, which was 15,000 higher than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 10.2 per cent, having been 9.8 per cent in April of the year before. There were 21,000 more employed than in April of the previous year. The number of persons in the inactive population was 35,000 lower than one year earlier.

    Cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew in the first quarter

    According to Statistics Finland, building permits were granted for a total of 8.2 million cubic metres in January to March 2017. The cubic volume of building permits granted was 2.0 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. The growth was biggest in building permits granted for commercial and office buildings. The cubic volume granted for residential building construction remained on level with the year before.

    Living alone continued increasing for men in 2016

    At the end of 2016 there were 1.1 million people living alone of whom 46 per cent were men. The number of men living alone has doubled in good twenty years. In 2016, men were a majority among persons living alone in the 25 to 54 age group. A majority of the men in this age group are unmarried. Seventeen per cent of them are divorced. According to Statistics Finland there were 256,000 men aged 25 to 54 living alone at the end of 2016 and the corresponding number of women living alone was 158,000.

    Overnight stays by foreign tourists grew strongly by 21.4 per cent in March 2017

    Nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments still increased strongly, by 21.4 per cent from last year and nearly 515,000 nights were recorded for them in March 2017. However, the number of nights spent by resident tourists went down by 1.9 per cent and totalled good 1.2 million overnight stays. A total of nearly 1.8 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in March 2017, which was 3.9 per cent more than in March 2016. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 16 lives in April

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 269 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in April. In them, 16 persons were killed and 360 persons injured. The number of persons killed was one higher and that of persons injured 34 lower than in April 2016.

    Immigration rose to a new record level in 2016

    According to Statistics Finland, 34,905 persons moved to Finland in 2016, which was 21 per cent more than one year earlier. The number of immigrants exceeded the record of 2013 by nearly 3,000 immigrants. Emigration also increased from the previous year, but clearly less than immigration. A total of 18,082 persons moved abroad from Finland, 11 per cent more than in the year before. The migration gain for Finland grew to 16,823 persons from the previous year's 12,441.

    More open job vacancies in the first quarter of 2017 than one year earlier

    According to the Job Vacancy Survey of Statistics Finland, there were 58,000 open job vacancies in the first quarter of 2017, while the figure was 48,000 one year before. The shares of fixed-term and part-time jobs in open vacancies remained almost unchanged. The reference period of the data is 1 March.
