    Government RD funding increases in the state budget for 2019

    According to Statistics Finland, appropriations for research and development in the budget increase by EUR 107.9 million from the year before. In the state budget 2019, the total appropriations for research and development activities amount to EUR 1,991.1 million. The share of public research funding in gross domestic product is estimated to be 0.83 per cent.

    More open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2018 than one year earlier

    There were 41,000 open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2018, while the figure was 37,200 one year before. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on open job vacancies and describe the situation on the first day of December. In 2018, there were 49,400 open job vacancies, on average, which is 19 per cent more than in the previous year (41,600).

    Road traffic accidents claimed 13 lives in January

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 291 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in January. In them, 13 persons were killed and 384 persons injured. The number of persons killed was five lower and that of persons injured five higher than in January 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    Building costs rose by 1.9 per cent in January year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 1.9 per cent in January 2019 from one year back. The prices of materials went up by 2.5 per cent, those of labour inputs by 1.4 per cent and those of services by 0.7 per cent compared with January 2018.

    Output of the national economy grew in December

    Seasonally adjusted output grew by 0.5 per cent in December 2018 from the month before. In December, working-day adjusted output was 2.7 per cent higher than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in November 2018 by 2.6 per cent (previously 1.8 per cent) from November 2017.

    Sales in total trade went down by 1.7 per cent year-on-year in December

    According to Statistics Finland, sales in total trade went down in December by 1.7 per cent from December 2017. Sales in motor vehicle trade decreased by 2.9 per cent and sales in wholesale trade, in turn, by 2.8 per cent. Sales in retail trade grew in December by 0.3 per cent from one year ago. Among retail trade industries, sales in daily consumer goods trade grew by 0.9 per cent and in department store trade by 0.2 per cent compared with December 2017.

    Turnover in manufacturing increased by 8.1 per cent in September to November

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in manufacturing in the September to November period was 8.1 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales grew by 4.3 per cent and export turnover by 10.9 per cent from one year ago.

    According to the financial statement estimates reported by municipalities in Mainland Finland, the combined annual contribution margin of municipalities weakened by EUR 1.2 billion in 2018, that is, over one-third compared to the financial statements of the previous year. Municipalities' loan stock increased by 3.8 per cent to EUR 16.7 billion. These data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on quarterly local government finances, for which financial statement estimate data concerning 2018 were collected from all 295 municipalities and 134 joint municipal authorities in Mainland Finland.

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 4.8 per cent in September to November from the corresponding period of the year before. Professional, scientific and technical activities (+6.7%) and information and communication (+6.5%) developed strongest. Administrative and support service activities (+5.2%) and real estate activities (+4.9%) also developed faster than the average growth for service industries. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    According to Statistics Finland, the turnover of construction enterprises grew by 8.9 per cent in September to November 2018. In the corresponding period one year earlier, the growth amounted to 6.7 per cent. The sales volume of construction increased by 3.1 per cent in September to November.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 4.6 per cent in October to December year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 4.6 per cent greater in the October to December period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In December, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 2.6 per cent from the year before. One year previously in October to December, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 3.5 per cent.

    According to Statistics Finland's employment statistics, around two-thirds of persons aged 18 to 24 outside work and education in 2017 had completed at least upper secondary level qualifications. In all, 37.6 per cent of the group had only comprehensive school education. The period of transition from upper secondary general school or vocational education to tertiary education is also visible in the variation of the number of persons outside work and education at around the age of 20.

    According to Statistics Finlands register of providers of education and register of educational institutions, there were 715 active providers of education and 3,236 educational institutions in which around 1.84 million students pursued studies at the end of 2018. A total of 2,234 comprehensive schools were in operation, 20 per cent of which were joint schools comprising grades 1 to 9. The share of joint schools in comprehensive schools has risen by 10 percentage points in ten years.
