    Farms amount of debt has grown in the 2010s

    The average debt of farms has grown from 2004 to 2015 from around EUR 39,000 to nearly EUR 75,000. In most production sectors, the amount of debt has grown faster than wealth, which is visible as a reduction in the net wealth ratio. The fall in net wealth has been faster in farms engaged in animal production than in those focusing on plant production. The year 2015 in particular was clearly weaker in animal farms than plant farms. These data derive from the 2015 statistics on the finances of agricultural and forestry enterprises published now.

    Unemployment rate 9.2 per cent in February

    According to Statistics Finlands Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in February 2017 was 242,000, which was 6,000 fewer than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 9.2 per cent, having been 9.4 per cent in February of the year before. There were 8,000 more employed than in February of the previous year. The number of persons in the inactive population was 4,000 lower than one year earlier.

    A total of 86 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the fourth quarter of 2016, which was 26 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter in 2015. The volume of transported soil materials increased by 32 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods grew by 23 per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the year before.     Discontinuation of education decreased

    In all, 5.1 per cent of students attending education leading to a qualification or degree discontinued their studies and did not resume them in any education leading to a qualification or degree during the 2014/2015 academic year. Compared to the year before, discontinuation decreased in upper secondary general, university of applied sciences and university education and remained unchanged in vocational education.     According to Statistics Finland's Education Statistics, employment among students decreased by close on one percentage in 2015 from the previous year. Slightly less than one-half of students were employed during their studies. Since 2004, the share has been highest in 2008 when nearly six out of ten students were employed during their studies.

    General government deficit decreased by EUR 0.6 billion in October to December

    In the fourth quarter of 2016, consolidated total general government revenue was on level with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Consolidated total expenditure decreased by EUR 0.6 billion from the previous years corresponding quarter. The difference between revenue and expenditure, that is, the deficit (net borrowing) of general government decreased by EUR 0.6 billion. Total revenue decreased by 0.6 per cent from the previous quarter. Total expenditure declined by 1.1 per cent from the previous quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the general government deficit (net borrowing) stood at EUR 4.2 billion. General government is comprised of central government, local government and social security funds.

    Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased heavily by 18.3 per cent at Finnish accommodation establishments from last year and good 615,000 nights were recorded for them in January 2017. The number of nights spent by resident tourists grew by 5.7 per cent and totalled nearly 827,000. A total of good 1.4 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in January 2017, which was 10.7 per cent more than in January 2016. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    Qualifications were completed faster

    According to Statistics Finlands education statistics, completion of university education accelerated. In all, 56 per cent of the students having started university education completed their studies in five-and-a-half years, 33 per cent completed lower university level degrees and 23 per cent higher university degrees. The pass rates of university of applied sciences and upper secondary vocational education also improved in 2015.

    General government EDP debt, or consolidated gross debt at nominal prices, totalled EUR 136.1 billion at the end of 2016. Compared with the respective period of the year before, general government debt increased by a total of EUR 2.7 billion.     According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, the volume of Finlands GDP grew by 1.4 per cent in 2016. The growth rate became slightly revised from the data published in early March (was 1.6 per cent). Last year, GDP that describes the output of the national economy stood at EUR 214 billion. National income describing the income of the national economy went up by 2.0 per cent in real terms.

    Seasonally adjusted output grew by 0.5 per cent in January 2017 from the month before. Adjusted for working days, output was 2.4 per cent higher than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in December 2016 by 1.0 per cent (was 1.0) from December 2015.

    The saving rate was kept negative in the fourth quarter by continued strong household consumption because households' disposable income increased further in the fourth quarter. The saving rate refers to the share of savings in disposable income. The profit share of the non-financial corporations sector grew compared to the previous quarter as the sector's value added grew more than compensation of employees paid. The investment rate of non-financial corporations also improved clearly from the previous quarter. These data derive from Statistics Finlands quarterly sector accounts.

    Tax revenue grew by 3.2 per cent in 2016

    The accrual of taxes and compulsory social security contributions grew by 3.2 per cent in 2016. The total accrual amounted to EUR 94.9 billion. The tax ratio grew from the previous year by 0.4 percentage points to 44.3 per cent. The tax ratio describes the ratio of taxes and compulsory social security contributions to gross domestic product. These data are based on the preliminary national accounts data for 2016.

    Building costs rose by 0.3 per cent in February year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.3 per cent in February 2017 from one year back. The prices of materials went up by 0.8 per cent and the prices of services by 1.3 per cent. The prices of labour inputs in construction, in turn, fell by 0.6 per cent compared with February of the previous year. The fall in the prices of labour inputs is explained by lower social security costs compared with 2016.

    The current account showed a deficit in the last quarter of 2016 as net exports of goods and services fell clearly. Capital flowed abroad from Finland. According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the current account deficit for the whole of 2016 increased from the year before as the value of exports fell. The year 2016 was the sixth successive year when the current account was in deficit.
