    Foreign affiliates significant in manufacturing

    According to Statistics Finland's data, the turnover of foreign enterprises located in Finland was EUR 92.2 billion in 2017. This was nine per cent more than in the previous year. The industry of manufacturing was most significant in terms of both the number of personnel and turnover. Most turnover was generated by Swedish, German, American, Swiss and Danish enterprises. Swedish enterprises accounted for 22.1 per cent of the turnover of foreign enterprises located in Finland. Foreign enterprises employed 254,980 persons, which is slightly more than in the year before. The number of foreign enterprises decreased slightly, to 4,308.

    Good economic development of the past few years has increased the income of household-dwelling units most in LaplandAccording to Statistics Finlands total statistics on income distribution, the median income of household-dwelling units in Finland was in real terms 2.5 per cent higher last year than in 2014, which marked the ending to the contraction of Finlands economy that had lasted for several years. The income development has been best in the sub-regional units of Tunturi-Lappi and Pohjois-Lappi, where the real income of household-dwelling units was around 5.5 per cent higher in 2017 than in 2014. The corresponding growth in income was 4.7 per cent in the sub-regional unit of Vakka-Suomi in Southwestern Finland.

    Statistics Finland's total statistics on income distribution show that income differentials grew in 2017 compared with the previous year. Real income increased in all income deciles, but more for those with high income than for those with medium and low income. The income level of the population's highest-income decile rose by 4.4 per cent in real terms from 2016 to 2017. The income of medium income earners (income deciles V to IX) increased by 1.3 per cent and the income of the four lowest income deciles by 1.2 per cent. The income level of the lowest-income decile grew by 2.2 per cent.

    The net operating profit of investment service companies was EUR 25 million in the third quarter of 2018. Some EUR nine million less operating profit was accumulated than in the corresponding quarter last year. Commission income fell by EUR 16 million to EUR 87 million from one year back.     According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, a total of 639,800 offences were recorded by the police, customs and border guard in January to September 2018, which is 22,900 cases (3.5 per cent) fewer than in 2017. The number of recorded offences against the Penal Code was 331,900 or one per cent lower. The recorded number of crimes against life and health was 26,700, which is 0.4 per cent lower than in January to September 2017. In all, 6.1 per cent more rapes and 26.1 per cent more cases of sexual harassment were reported than in the year before.

    The total value added of manufacturing enterprises (TOL C) was EUR 29.6 billion. The value added generated was EUR 2.6 billion more than in the year before. Wages and salaries and other personnel expenses amounted to EUR 16.8 billion. Thus the relation between value added and personnel costs, that is, real productivity, was 1.7 in 2017. Real productivity in manufacturing has improved in recent years, but the level of the whole industry ten years ago has still not been reached. These data derive from Statistics Finlands structural business and financial statement statistics.

    In 2017, direct taxes and payments paid by income earners totalled EUR 29.9 billion, which was in nominal terms 1.5 per cent less than one year earlier. They paid EUR 18.5 billion in municipal taxes, EUR 5.5 billion in taxes on earned income, and EUR 2.8 billion in taxes on capital income. The share of the public broadcasting tax in taxes was EUR 489 million and that of sickness insurance contributions EUR 1.7 billion. The amount of municipal taxes decreased from the previous year by 1.4 per cent, income tax by 5.3 per cent and sickness insurance contributions by 14 per cent. In turn, the amount of taxes on capital income grew by 17.3 per cent and the public broadcasting tax by one per cent from the year before.

    Over 1,200 died from accidental falls - the majority aged over 75

    According to Statistics Finland's statistics on causes of death, a total of over 1,200 persons died as a result of accidental stumbles and falls in 2017. This was more than half of all accidental deaths. In recent years, the number of accidental falls especially among men has increased. Four out of five falls resulting in death occurred to persons aged over 75. The most common place where accidents happened was at home.

    Unemployment rate of young men higher than that of women in all regions

    According to Statistics Finland's employment statistics, 296,500 persons were unemployed at the end of 2017. There were 38,700 unemployed aged 18 to 24. Among young men, the share of unemployed in the labour force was higher than among women in all regions. Around every third unemployed young person had also been unemployed in the previous year. Forty-one per cent of unemployed persons aged 18 to 24 did not belong to families.

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 2.5 per cent in November 2018 from one year back. The prices of materials went up by 2.7 per cent, those of labour inputs by 2.4 per cent and those of services by 1.0 per cent compared with November 2017.

    The current account was in deficit in the third quarter of 2018. The value of goods exports in balance of payment terms increased by 3 per cent and the value of service exports by 5 per cent. The net exports of goods and services turned into deficit as imports grew faster than exports. Goods trade was also in deficit in addition to services. Goods trade was last in deficit in the last quarter of 2016. The net international investment position strengthened.     Inflation 1.3 per cent in November

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.3 per cent in November. In October, inflation stood at 1.5 per cent. The slight decline in inflation from October to November was due to lower prices of vegetables, fuels and package tours abroad.

    Service exports grew by five per cent in the third quarter of 2018 compared to the corresponding quarter last year. Service imports grew by eight per cent. Other business services were both sold and purchased more than in the third quarter of 2017, which most explains the growth in both service exports and imports.     In October 2018, working-day adjusted output was 2.9 per cent higher than one year before. Seasonally adjusted output was in October 0.2 per cent lower than in the month before.     According to Statistics Finland's education statistics, 72 per cent of new passers of the matriculation examination in 2017 did not continue studies leading to a qualification or degree in the year of the matriculation examination. In ten years, the share of those left outside further studies among new passers of the matriculation examination has grown by 15 percentage points. Seventy-five per cent of passers of the matriculation examination applied for further studies. Of completers of comprehensive school, 53 per cent immediately continued in upper secondary general education after comprehensive school and 41 per cent in vocational education.
