    Number of new students grew in universities of applied sciences education

    According to Statistics Finlands education statistics, a total of 132,800 students attended education leading to a university of applied sciences degree in 2020. The number of students was four per cent higher than in the previous year. The number of students attending education leading to a higher university of applied sciences degree was 16,000, altogether 12 per cent more than in the previous year. The number of new students in education leading to a university of applied sciences degree grew by 14 per cent from the previous year and that in education leading to a higher university of applied sciences degree by 25 per cent.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, a total of 103,400 offences against the Criminal Code were recorded by the police, customs and border guard during January to March 2021, which is 10,600 cases (9.3 per cent) fewer than in the corresponding period in 2020. A total of 45,400 offences against property were recorded, which is 15.5 per cent fewer than in the year before. The number of assault offences was 13.4 per cent lower than in the year before.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total consumption of energy in 2020 amounted to 1.28 million terajoules (TJ), which corresponded to a drop of six per cent compared with the previous year. The volume of energy produced by incineration decreased clearly. By contrast, renewable production of hydro, wind and solar power increased. Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels decreased by 10 per cent. Total electricity consumption fell to its lowest in 20 years.

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 1.3 per cent in March 2021 from one year back. The costs of materials went up by 1.6 per cent and labour costs by 1.2 per cent. The prices of services fell by 0.3 per cent from one year ago.

    Number of car kilometres decreased by four per cent in 2020

    In 2020, the total number of kilometres driven with passenger cars was 39,092 million car kilometres, i.e. four per cent fewer as in the year before. The kilometres for heavy vehicles decreased by four per cent last year. The traffic performance on highways decreased from the previous year.     Adjusted for working days, industrial output fell by 0.6 per cent in February 2021 from one year back. In February, seasonally adjusted output grew by 0.3 per cent from the month before. According to revised data, working day adjusted output fell in January 2021 by 1.4 per cent (previously -3.7 per cent) from January 2020.

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in industry (TOL BCD) grew in February by 6.2 per cent year-on-year. Among the main industries, turnover grew most in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, by 29.8 per cent from one year back. The growth in the industry was in part affected by risen prices of electricity. Turnover in the forest industry increased by 22.6 per cent year-on-year. The growth is explained by industrial actions in the field in February 2020, due to which the turnover of the forest industry was lower than normal. Seasonally adjusted turnover in industry (TOL BCD) grew by 2.6 per cent in February compared with January.

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in total trade adjusted for working days grew by 3.9 per cent in February from February 2020. Over the same period, the working day adjusted volume of sales in total trade, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, increased by 2.9 per cent. Turnover and sales volume increased in all main sectors of trade in February. In this year's January, turnover went up by 1.8 per cent, while sales volume rose correspondingly by 2.3 per cent.

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries fell by 8.4 per cent in February 2021 from February 2020. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, fell by 7.6 per cent over the same period. In this years January, turnover went down by 9.3 per cent, while volume contracted correspondingly by 8.0 per cent. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    According to Statistics Finland, the working day adjusted turnover of construction enterprises fell by 4.0 per cent in February compared to the previous year. The volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, decreased by 3.3 per cent. Turnover and sales volume fell in all industries of construction. The decline was strong especially in building construction.

    According to Statistics Finlands data, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 0.2 per cent higher in the December to February period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In February, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 1.4 per cent from the year before. One year previously in December to February, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 2.3 per cent.
