    Break-ins into houses most common in summer months

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, a total of 333,500 offences against the Criminal Code were recorded by the police, customs and border guard during January to September 2019, which is 200 cases (0.1 per cent) more than in January to September 2018. A total of 158,200 offences against property were recorded, which is two per cent more than in 2018. In all, 12 per cent more rapes were reported than in the corresponding period in the previous year.

    EUR 1.3 billion used on renovating industrial and warehouse buildings

    According to Statistics Finland, EUR 1.3 billion was spent on renovating industrial and warehouse buildings in 2018. Compared to the previous year, the value of industrial and warehouse building renovations grew by 16 per cent. Relative to the floor area, the renovation costs in industrial and warehouse buildings were EUR 15.5 per m.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 24 lives in September

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 389 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in September. In them, 24 persons were killed and 473 persons injured. The number of persons killed was five higher and that of persons injured 33 higher than in September 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    In the time series based on new calculations the share of culture in the economy in 2017 has decreased slightly compared to 2016, that is the share in GDP was 3.4 per cent (3.5 per cent in 2016). The latest cultural satellite calculations take into account both the time series revision made in national accounts and the industry change of some games industry enterprises. Adding the games industry to the calculation affected the results so that the previous continuously falling trend has actually been growing in recent years and only in 2017 has the share of culture in the economy, both measured by output and value added, made a downturn. The share of culture of the employed has decreased constantly and as a result of the new calculations the share of the employed has decreased more than the share of output and value added in recent years.

    Building costs rose by 0.8 per cent in September year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.8 per cent in September 2019 compared with the previous year's September. The prices of labour inputs went up by 1.6 per cent and the prices of materials by 0.4 per cent. The prices of services remained unchanged from the previous year.

    Current account was in surplus in August. The value of exports of goods in balance of payments terms decreased by 5 per cent from twelve months back. There was net capital inflow from abroad to Finland. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on balance of payments and international investment position.

    Index of wage and salary earnings rose by 2.4 percent in July-September

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, the nominal earnings of wage and salary earners rose by 2.4 per cent in July to September 2019 when compared with the respective period in 2018. Real earnings rose by 1.4 per cent compared to the third quarter of the previous year, because the rise in earnings level was faster than that in consumer prices.

    Output of the national economy grew in August

    Adjusted for working days, output went up by 2.5 per cent in August 2019 from one year back. In August, seasonally adjusted output grew by 0.5 per cent from the month before. According to revised data, working day adjusted output grew in July by 2.5 per cent (previously 1.7 per cent) from July 2018.

    Turnover and output in services grew in August

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 4.5 per cent in August 2019 from August 2018. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 3.1 per cent over the same period. In this year's July, turnover reached a growth of 5.9 per cent, while volume went up by 4.6 per cent from one year back. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    Turnover in manufacturing grew by 1.9 per cent in August

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) increased in August by 1.9 per cent year-on-year. Among the main manufacturing industries, the growth in working day adjusted turnover was strongest in the electrical and electronics industry, 27.4 per cent. Seasonally adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) grew by 0.1 per cent compared with July.

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.9 per cent in September. In August inflation stood at 1.1 per cent. The decrease in inflation was caused by lower prices of vegetables, for example.

    Turnover of trade grew by 1.2 per cent in August

    According to Statistics Finland, the working day adjusted turnover of total trade grew by 1.2 per cent in August compared to August 2018. The working day adjusted sales volume, from which the impact of price changes has been eliminated, also increased by 1.3 per cent over the same period. Both turnover and sales volume grew in all industries of trade apart from wholesale trade.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 2.8 per cent year-on-year in June to August

    According to Statistics Finlands data, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 2.8 per cent greater in the June to August period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In August, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 2.9 per cent from the year before. One year previously in June to August, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 5.1 per cent.

    The working day adjusted turnover of construction enterprises grew by 2.8 per cent year-on-year in August. Among construction industries, growth was strongest in specialised construction enterprises, where the working day adjusted turnover grew by 5.9 per cent and the sales volume increased by 1.8 per cent compared to August 2018. Even though the turnover of the entire construction industry increased, the sales volume decreased by 0.6 per cent. The sales volume considers the changes in construction prices.

    The net operating profit of investment service companies was EUR 30 million in the second quarter of 2019. Some EUR six million less operating profit was accumulated than in the corresponding quarter last year. Commission income fell by EUR 8 million to EUR 99 million from one year back.
