    Building costs rose by 0.4 per cent in November year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.4 per cent in November 2017 from one year back. The prices of materials rose by 1.7 per cent and those of services by 1.3 per cent compared with November of the previous year. At the same time, the prices of labour inputs fell by 1.3 per cent. The fall in the prices of labour inputs is explained by lower employers social security costs compared with 2016.

    The current account showed a surplus of EUR 0.5 billion in October. The value of goods exports in balance of payments terms increased by 13 per cent from twelve months back.     In the third quarter of 2017, the net income from financial operations of credit institutions engaged in banking in Finland amounted to EUR 630 million and their operating profit was EUR 451 million. The net income from financial operations went up by EUR 17 million and the operating profit declined by EUR 155 million from one year ago.     Seasonally adjusted output fell by 0.4 per cent in October 2017 from the month before. Adjusted for working days, output was 2.6 per cent higher than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in September 2017 by 3.4 per cent (previously 3.8 per cent) from last year's September. The revision was caused by the benchmarking of the data to quarterly accounts.

    Sales increased in all sectors of trade in October

    According to Statistics Finland, sales in total trade increased by 8.0 per cent in October from one year ago. Wholesale trade sales grew most among the sectors of trade, altogether by 11.5 per cent. Sales in motor vehicle trade, in turn, grew by 6.9 per cent in October and retail trade went up by 2.2 per cent. Among retail trade industries, sales of daily consumer goods grew by 1.1 per cent and sales in department store trade by 1.8 per cent from October 2016.

    The turnover from Finland's environmental goods and services sector was EUR 36 billion in 2016. The value added of the environmental goods and services sector was EUR 12 billion, which was around six per cent of the value added of the entire national economy. The environmental goods and services sector employed 130,000 persons and its exports amounted to EUR seven billion in 2016.     The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.8 per cent in November. In October, inflation stood at 0.5 per cent. The rise in inflation from October to November was mainly caused by the price rise in petrol.

    Nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments continued to grow, by 12.3 per cent from last year and nearly 356,000 nights were recorded for them in October 2017. The number of nights spent by resident tourists remained on level with last year; up by just 0.3 per cent and totalled good 1.1 million overnight stays. A total of nearly 1.5 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in October 2017, which was 2.9 per cent more than one year earlier. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    According to Statistics Finland, nearly all completers of the full upper secondary general school syllabus in 2017 had studied English, and Finnish or Swedish during their attendance of upper secondary general school. German had been studied by 19 per cent, Spanish by 16 per cent, French by 12 per cent and Russian by 10 per cent of the completers of upper secondary general school education. The proportions of those having studied other foreign languages remained below two per cent. They also vary considerably between genders in several languages.

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in manufacturing in the July to September period was 6.1 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales grew by 3.5 per cent and export turnover by 8.0 per cent from one year ago.

    According to Statistics Finlands education statistics, immediate entrance into further studies for new passers of the matriculation examination was more difficult in 2016 than before, as under one third immediately continued studies leading to a qualification or degree. In ten years, the share of those left outside further studies among new passers of the matriculation examination has grown from 57 to 71 per cent. Seventy-five per cent of passers of the matriculation examination applied for further studies. Nearly all who completed comprehensive school in 2016 immediately continued to further studies, only 2.5 per cent were left outside education.

    According to Statistics Finland, the turnover of construction enterprises grew by 7.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2017. In the corresponding period one year earlier, the growth amounted to 8.4 per cent. The sales volume of construction grew by 4.2 per cent in July to September.

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 6.3 per cent in July to September from the corresponding period of the year before. Among the industries, administrative and support services activities (+10.1%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+8.9%) still developed most strongly. Turnover in transportation and storage also attained a good growth of 6.8 per cent. Turnover rose most moderately in other service activities (+2.2%). Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    According to Statistics Finland's Education Statistics, the number of teaching hours in open education at universities of applied sciences decreased by 10 per cent, but the number of participants still grew in 2016. In 2016, good one million hours were taught in open education at universities of applied sciences, which was 115,000 hours fewer than in the previous year. At the same time, the number of participants in university of applied sciences education increased by 15 per cent to nearly 44,000 from the year before.
